Education

This is an overview of the range of educational events SGCNZ is responsible for.

SGCNZ Regional University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festivals (UOSWSF)

In 1992 SGCNZ held its first Sheilah Winn Festival of Shakespeare in Schools (SWFSS). Over 75,000 have participated since!

They take place now in 22 regions throughout New Zealand , with some 5500 participants from over half the schools with secondary students involved. Groups directed by adults or students perform 15 minute scenes, and 5 minute student-only directed excerpts, which are assessed. One of each category will be selected for the public performances during the National Festival in Wellington from 2-6 June.

Toi Whakaari:NZ Drama School is again generously donating awards for every Regional Festival. About 65 theatre practitioners are engaged annually for the Festivals, forging vital links between emerging young artists and professionals, providing invaluable experience on stage and behind the scenes.

SGCNZ is hugely grateful to the massive commitment and goodwill of the valued SGCNZ Regional Representatives and thousands of volunteers nationwide.

SGCNZ National University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival

Those selected to participate in the National UOSWSF attend workshops, talks, have the chance to see presentations at the Paramount Theatre from Toi Whakaari:NZ Drama School, Victoria University Theatre & Film, The Film School, Wellington Performing Arts Centre and University of Otago Wellington Campus. Time is factored in to enjoy live theatre in Wellington. The selected groups perform their excerpts at public performances on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 June at Wellington East Girls’ College.

Awards recognise various types of excellence and expertise - from understanding of the text, interaction with each other and the audience, through to the allied arts of dance, music and design.

SGCNZ National Shakespeare Schools Production (NSSP)

In order to capture an outstanding student not in a group chosen to attend the National Festival, one may be chosen from each Regional Festival, as its Direct Entry Student to NSSP. A further 24 students will be selected during the course of the National Festival. During NSSP 2010, which will be held in Dunedin from 26 September–3 October, the students at this week-long intensive study Shakespearean topics and workshop and rehearse three of his plays under leading Directors, culminating with a public performance.

SGCNZ Young Shakespeare Company (SGCNZ YSC)

During NSSP, students are continuously assessed and 24 (approx) chosen to represent NZ as members of SGCNZ Young Shakespeare Company 2011. Each student is responsible for funding of approximately $7500 plus $650 personal expenses themselves for this tightly packed study and performance trip representing NZ in London and Stratford-Upon-Avon.

This includes spending 10 days at Shakespeare’s Globe doing workshops, Q&A sessions with Globe actors and directors, an orienteering Shakespeare Rally, attending performances, being rehearsed by a Globe director and tutors, and performing for family and friends on the Globe stage.

Associated Competitions

In association with it there are four nationwide competitions: SGCNZ/ Bernina NZ Ltd Shakespeare Costume Design Competition,
SGCNZ Shakespeare Static Image Competition,
SGCNZ/Morrison Music Trust Shakespeare Music Composition Competition,
